Transforming a garage into an office

Mar 07, 2021

With an increase in the need for workspace, people have begun investing in commercial office space in residential areas like their homes. Some find this appealing because they do not want to have to move to a new home when the current lease is up. Others enjoy the security and coziness of a larger house or building, and would like the convenience of an office. Some downsizing or even choosing to move out of the home they currently live in so that they can have more space for a business. Regardless of your reasoning for transforming a garage into an office, you have some decisions to make about what you will do with your newly transformed garage space.

You should start by evaluating how much space you will need to convert your garage into an office. The conversion process varies depending on the size and shape of your garage. If you have a winding driveway and steep incline coming up from the garage to the house, you may have more obstacles to deal with and may need to hire a contractor to convert the garage into a usable room. If you have a straight driveway, you may have enough slope to convert the garage into a usable office space without too much difficulty. For this reason, you should determine how large of an office space you will need before you begin your remodel.

How to transform a garage into an office will vary based upon the type of work you want to do in your garage. If you need the extra room to accommodate office equipment, you will likely want to convert the garage into a storage facility. This would include anything from file cabinets and computer carts to teleconferencing equipment. If you need a work space exclusively for yourself, however, you may not need the extra space. In this case, you would simply need to convert the garage into an office where you can conduct your business.

In either of these cases, you will first need to determine what you want out of your office, and then you will need to convert the garage into the office you need. Depending upon the type of work you plan to do in the garage, you will need to figure out what you will need to store within it. If you need to store large items, such as furniture, for example, you would likely need to convert the garage into an office that features cubicles and other storage spaces.
