Imagine this: You are in the middle of making dinner, and you open a can to get the ingredients for your recipe. Your can opener suddenly breaks. You're now in a bind. How will you open a container without a can opener?
We wondered the same thing. There are many hacks in the kitchen that can help you manage your kitchen. These hacks are also excellent if you forget to take a can opener when camping.
Safety first
Important safety tip: These techniques should not be attempted by children. Adults should use them with caution. If you aren't careful, metal cans can become sharpened if you try to pry open them. Also, you should check your food for small pieces of metal after opening the can.
Method 1: Use a metal spoon.
All you need is a spoon made of metal and some determination. This is a great kitchen tip. Here are the steps.
- Step 1: Place the can on the counter.
- Step 2: Once you have your sturdy metal spoon selected, grab the bowl and not the handle.
- Step 3: Slowly but steadily move the spoon along the can's edge. Use your strength.
- Step 4: Continue rubbing until the metal begins to thin and creates a small hole.
- Step 5: Insert the spoon into the hole.
- Step 6: Open the top side by pulling the spoon along the edges.
- Step 7: Keep prying around the perimeter until you reach the top.
Method 2: Use two pairs of pliers.
Here's another way. You'll need to use pliers for this one. Here are the steps:
- Step 1: Maintain the can between your thumbs and forefinger.
- Step 2: Push the pliers along one edge of the can.
- Step 3: Use the pliers to make a complete circle around the can's top. To reduce the chance of getting hurt, tighten your hold on your pliers while you work your way around the can.
- Step 4: Once you have reached one-quarter of the can's circumference, give the top a good tug.
Method 3: Use a rock.
Don't panic if you fail to bring the can opener while camping. You can utilize what Mother Nature has left for you.
- Step 1: Turn the can upside-down onto a block of concrete or rough rock.
- Step 2: Do a scrubbing motion, rubbing the can back and forth. The metal will eventually be eaten by friction.
- Step 3: Stop once you notice moisture on the lid or surface. Continue to use the can, and eventually, the lid will come off entirely. Food will leak if you keep going.
- Step 4: Open the can with a knife, a pocket knife, or another tool that is small enough to fit between its lid and the edge.
