How to Climb a Ladder Safely

According to a study, over 25% of accidents involving falls from high places are due to the ladders. This often leads to broken limbs, bruises and occasionally, more severe. The worst part is that it could be quickly avoided if the standard safety guidelines are followed.

How to Put Up Ladders?

The wrong location is the most common error that can result in injuries. Here's how to set the ladder in a safe manner.

  • Be sure to not place the ladder on a surface that is uneven.
  • Lay the ladder down flat onto the floor.
  • Use one end of the ladder against the wall.
  • Then, lift the opposite side of the ladder and then rest it on the walls.
  • Find the correct angle by using a ratio of 1:4. Divide the ladder into four. If the ladder is four meters long, its base should be one millimeter of the wall.
  • When the ladder seems particularly long, you should find another person who can help at the other end.

How to Climb an Extension Ladder Safely?

Here are the most crucial aspects to remember when you're planning to utilize extensions ladders. For safety advice regarding steps ladders go to the bottom of the page.

  • Make sure that the ladder you are using is in good condition and functional before you use it. Make sure to look for broken steps or other problems.
  • If you are putting the ladder on the ground ensure that it's placed on an even and non slippery surface. Keep in mind that a single swing could be vital. When the surface appears uneven do not put any thing under the ladder because it could make the ladder more unstable.
  • Always climb using two hands, facing the ladder.
  • Do not hold a bag of tools in your hand while getting up.
  • Make each step slowly and don't hurry it. If the angle isn't correct, you should be able to feel shaking. Return to the ground to correct the angle, if needed.

How to Climb a Step Ladder Safely?

  • Make sure the ladder is in good condition and functional prior to using it.
  • Do not put a stepladder over uneven or slippery surface.
  • Do not stand or sit at the very top of the step ladder.
  • Only climb the side of the ladder, and never on the back.
  • Do not allow another person to get on the opposite side. There are special two-person ladders available and if you don't have one, allow the second person stand on the ladder in case they wish to assist.
  • Keep your hips in the two rails on the vertical side.
  • Take all tools and other materials off the ladder prior to moving it. Do you really want to risk the hammer to fall on your face?
  • Do not use a step ladder as an extension ladder, by placing it against the wall.

Don't leave step ladders alone especially when there are children nearby. Think about your childhood and how much enjoyable it was to climb up high - nowadays' youngsters want to climb them too. Therefore, once you've finished working, you can put the ladder away or at the very least, place it on the floor.
